Survivor of four quakes — old-vine Carignan ripens in Maule sun

by Derek in Vines

Maule is a valley of old-vines, mostly Pais, but lots of Cabernet, Cabernet Franc and Carignan as well. These vines have been dry-farmed for 75 + years. Without irrigation their roots have grown deep into the soils of Maule and produce lesser known very distinctive wines. These vines have survived four major quakes one of which was the most powerful quake of all time in 1960 (1939, 1960, 1985 & 2010 respectively).
